Mexico: Indigenous Six sentenced to 15 and 18 years in prison for miscarriage in Veracruz

ALAPA, Veracruz, May 10 (approved) .- At least six women in the indigenous regions of Papantla and Zongolica serving sentences of 15 to 18 years imprisonment in the jails of this entity have miscarriage.

Although it was not his fault, state officials considered these women as criminals because they were accused of homicide, denounced Xalapa Feminist Collective.

Montserrat Díaz, a member of the organization, explained that most of these w om en abortions were naturally, that is, an abortion was not voluntary, but "were wrongly accused by applying a negative justice against him."

In coordination with the Veracruz Women's Institute (IVM) and the Directorate of Prevention and Rehabilitation, feminist groups legally analyze the cases of these women, "who have been charged as criminals from misogynist views."

Of these six cases, he said, there are two in which women had a spontaneous abortion for health reasons after six or seven months pregnant and therefore the ministerial authorities have accused of having committed the crime of were applied homicide and high prison sentences.

Last November, when the initiative for constitutional status to the protection of life from the moment of conception until natural death led to a prickly debate and conflicting positions between civil society groups, feminists and groups linked to the Catholic Church, Gov. Fidel Herrera Beltran agreed to promote the release of these women.

To date, remain in prison, but the activist said they are in the process of analysis, since there was talk of declaring a pardon or amnesty. "The pardon only removes the sanctions and amnesty should be to eliminate the legal action already under way and what you're looking for full release," he said.
